Everyone I Owe, 2011

Famed 19th century photographer, Mathew Brady, could not control his spending. He spent lavishly on clothing, studio furnishings, studio props, and self promotional materials. This is a list of Mathew Brady’s creditors at the time of his bankruptcy in 1873. I found this handwritten accounting in his bankruptcy court records at the National Archives. Brady owed photographers, photo suppliers, lithographers, painters, decorators, bookkeepers, advertisers, lawyers, and plumbers, among others.
